How to read these benchmarks

A valuation multiple is a shorthand for what buyers pay relative to a business’s earnings. A restaurant at “2× SDE” earning ₹10 lakh a year in owner earnings would be worth about ₹20 lakh. Two businesses in the same industry can sit at opposite ends of the range: the one with steady growth, healthy margins, low owner-dependence and clean records sells near the top; the one reliant on the owner, with thin or lumpy profits, near the bottom.

Most Indian SMEs are valued on SDE (owner earnings). Fast-growing consumer brands are often valued on revenue instead, because the growth and brand — not current profit — are what buyers pay for.

Methodology & sources

These ranges are compiled from observed transaction multiples for Indian small and medium businesses, adviser rules-of-thumb, and comparable public data, expressed as a typical low-to-high band per industry. They are a reference, not a certified valuation. An individual business’s estimate is calculated from its own earnings, growth, margins, size, location and risk profile.

We publish only aggregate, market-level ranges. Anonymized live averages appear per industry solely once a category has at least 20 valuations — no individual business’s data is ever shown or shared.

Frequently asked questions

What multiple do small businesses sell for in India?

Most profitable Indian SMEs change hands at roughly 1.5× to 5× their annual owner earnings (SDE), depending on the industry, growth and how dependent the business is on the owner. Asset-light, high-margin businesses like IT services and clinics sit at the higher end; thin-margin trading and food businesses at the lower end.

What is SDE and why value on it?

SDE (Seller’s Discretionary Earnings) is the annual profit a full-time owner takes out — net profit plus the owner’s salary and one-off or personal expenses added back. For owner-run SMEs it reflects the real cash the business generates better than accounting profit, so buyers price off it.

Are these benchmarks a valuation of my business?

No. They are typical market ranges for reference. Your actual value depends on your specific earnings, growth, margins, location, assets and risk. Use the free Business Valuation tool for an estimate tailored to your numbers.

How often are these updated?

The ranges are reviewed against market conditions. As more businesses are valued on 3XScale, we publish anonymized live averages per industry once a category has enough data to be statistically meaningful.
