A 3XScale guide · updated September 2026

Introduction to ITR 2

If you are an individual or part of a Hindu Undivided Family earning money through capital gains, house property, or multiple sources, chances are you need to file ITR 2. Gathering the right paperwork beforehand makes tax filing much less stressful. At 3XScale, we want to help you get your documents in order easily so you can file accurately without any panic.

Basic Personal and Identity Details

Before you dive into your financial numbers, keep your core identity documents ready. These are essential for verifying who you are on the tax portal.

  • PAN Card: Your primary identity proof for all tax-related matters in India.
  • Aadhaar Card: Required to link with your PAN and for biometric or OTP verification.
  • Bank Account Details: Keep the account numbers, names, and IFSC codes of all active bank accounts ready, including any accounts you closed during the financial year, as the tax department needs to know about them and send refunds.

Income Proofs Beyond a Regular Salary

ITR 2 is usually filed by people who have income streams outside of a basic salary, or higher earnings that require more detailed reporting.

  • Form 16 and Form 16A: Form 16 is your salary certificate issued by your employer, while Form 16A shows tax deducted at source (TDS) on non-salary income like interest from your fixed deposits.
  • Rental Income Details: If you own a house and rent it out, keep your rental agreements, tenant details, and property tax receipts handy. You will also need the home loan interest certificate if you are paying off a mortgage.
  • Capital Gains Statements: If you sold mutual funds, stocks, or real estate during the year, download the capital gains summary statements from your broker or mutual fund platform to calculate your profits or losses.

Tax Saving Investments and Deductions Proofs

To lower your taxable income, you must have the paperwork for all the investments and expenses you want to claim under deductions.

  • Investment Receipts: Documents for tax-saving instruments like Public Provident Fund (PPF), National Pension System (NPS), life insurance premiums, and tuition fees for your children.
  • Medical and Donation Receipts: Premium receipts for health insurance policies (Mediclaim) and valid donation receipts if you contributed to approved charitable trusts.

Who should file ITR 2 instead of ITR 1?

ITR 1 is meant for resident individuals with simpler income up to a certain limit, mainly from salary and one house property. If you have capital gains from selling shares or property, income from more than one house, or foreign assets, you must use ITR 2.

Do I need to upload all these documents while filing?

No, you usually do not need to upload copies of these documents on the portal while submitting your return. However, you must keep them safely stored for several years in case the tax department asks for verification later.

What if I missed collecting a Form 16 from an old employer?

You can download your Tax Credit Statement, known as Form 26AS or the Annual Information Statement (AIS), from the income tax portal. It reflects all the tax deducted by your employers and banks throughout the year.
